A Twilight Kiss

The key to writing and publishing my first Spanish post was my teacher at the Instituto Cervantes Manila — Sra. Mila Vieco. Watching how she would cheerfully check our written assignments made me think, ‘Would she mind checking some additional stuff that I’ve written for my blog A Twilight Kiss?’

Mustering my courage, I approached her and asked in basic Spanish whether she would do so. She readily replied ‘Yes,’ and, fearful that this might be a one time thing only, I prepared three very short posts in Spanish.

My knowledge is not yet of that level that I can translate what I’ve written to Spanish, so, I “rewrote” some of the posts to fit what I only knew, with a smattering of, what I would learn later, lessons in the higher levels taught at the Instituto Cervantes

Plus, since the Spanish language’s rhythm is very different from English, I found it easier to write in Spanish first and then translate what I’ve written to English. Thus, my first published attempt on the blog is Robert Pattinson y Kristen Stewart ríen dentro del coche en el rodaje de Eclipse or Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Laugh Inside the Car on the Eclipse Set.

Now, Sra. Mila Vieco told us an amusing story wherein during European trade talks, there would be Spanish interpreters between countries that speak Spanish. Why? Because the Spanish language has grown to adapt in each country, so, although basically Spanish can be understood in all Spanish speaking countries, there are numerous differences as well, in the same way that England’s English would have expressions and terms that can’t be found among Americans and Australians, and vice versa.

Thus, since I’m studying at the Instituto Cervantes, what I’m learning is the “version” that’s being used in Spain, and, hopefully, over time, I’ll be familiar a little bit with the other countries “adaptations” as well. One word that is emphasized that must not be used in Mexico and Latin America is the word c—r, which is commonly used in Spain for the most incongruous reason of taking a form of transportation, but, totally means a carnal activity in its Spanish speaking counterparts.

If you read my Spanish posts, you will probably be kept abreast of my improvements, since they are currently connected with what my lessons are about. For example, Robert Pattinson y las chicas, ¡vamos a beber! was born after Sra. Mila Vieco discussed in class the normal daily activities that a Spaniard would have. I used their love for going out at night and sharing a drink with friends in the post, plus, I mentioned tapas because we just went through a culinary lesson wherein we learned what to call common food ingredients, and, I used the very confusing reflexive verbs of the Spanish language.

Sra. Mila Vieco is very appreciative of my efforts. So far, she’s been willingly checking my writing attempts and is amused by them. Hopefully, she will still be my teacher for the next level. If not, I hope all my future teachers don’t mind checking my self-imposed additional assignments. LOL
