Why Didn’t I Cry While Watching New Moon

ATK reader Eugenia told me that The Twilight Saga New Moon DVD will be released quite soon, and, without blinking an eye, I said, “I’m not that interested in buying it.”

By the time I watched New Moon on the big screen for the third time, I finally had to concede something. Definitely, New Moon is, by far, more superior visually than Twilight, and I am infinitely relieved by that. Sadly, however, New Moon lacks the emotional tones that causes gripping painful reverberations, surprising since the second installment is the most torturous of the four books with the departure of Edward Cullen and the depression of Bella Swan

I cannot attribute the cause to a hardened heart. On the contrary, it’s almost embarrassing how I can be moved to tears in an instant by a real emotional moment. So, it’s quite disturbing how all the sequences in New Moon not once touched me in an instinctive primal manner.

I don’t wish to delve into the reasons why, because I think I will be even more disturbed by the possible reasons.

    hey! i didn´t cry either!!
i was sad, but i didn´t cry!! anyway i love the movie!!!

  • jo Says:

i couldn’t agree with you more, new moon missed the emotion twilight had, during the movie i shed a tear only in the scene where bella says it’s alwasy been him,and i thought i would cry during the entire movie

  • Tahira Says:

You know I didn’t really cry during the movie.I wanted to so maybe just a tear fell , but it was emotional but just not enough. Because when I read THE book I did cry when Edward left.

  • Rosie Says:

    Yeah. same here.
I didnt cry when i watched NW,but i cried when i read the book.
I think CW didnt do as well as CH.
CH successed bring robsten chemistry when CW didnt.
But, he good at CGI and stuff.

  • janis Says:

yeah i didn’t cry either.i totally agree with you lorna no emotions at all before i blame it on the many NM previews and stills but later i realize its maybe because the director is a guy and the costumes are bad as well edward looks old almost the look alike of CW coz of the suit.

  • jo Says:

and i’m afriad the same will happen on eclipse, too much action and CGI and not enough romance,i like CW but i wouldnt like him coming back to direct BD,BD is my only hope

  • kristine Says:

i didn’t cry either. though i almost did when i saw kristen’s face during the “blank months”… almost…

  • macha Says:

Honestly I was quite disappointed on how the movie turned out. I couldn’t feel Bella’s sadness when Edward left her nor did I feel any when love blossoms between her and Jacob.

I’d rather watch 3-long hours of a good solid movie rather than 2 hours of a movie that has important scenes been cut out.

    …but I’ll but the DVD anyway! =P

  • jaide Says:

jo: i heard that too. and i am thoroughly disappointed. i agree, bd is my only hope also, because they will probably f eclipse up like they did nm. nm felt so desolate and different from twilight, and not in a good way. i much rathered twilight.

  • Ana Lisbeth Says:

    I didn’t cry either…nd I understand your point…
But I did find myself, feelin with a little somethin in my heart on the “window scene ” becuz of the song Possibility, nd the expression on Bella…but I think NM lacked the very bests moments of NM the book…nd I found myself the other day doin with New Moon the movie as I do with New Moon the book…seein the beginin nd the end…

  • Mari Says:

Am I the onlyone that actually cried then? I felt so bipolar while watching the movie because I would cry, laugh and get mad every second. My friend practically started screaming at me because I couldn’t stop crying. But then again I cried while I was reading twilight; the part in the hospital after James when they are telling each other how much they love one another. I feel like such a dork for being one of the onlyones to cry… rofl

  • blahblah Says:

yeh, because the film focused on jacob’s abs. haha! film showed too much on jacob’s transformation. the longing was not present. bella shed not a single teardrop.

  • Andi Says:

Well, the moment that got me involved Jake as the heartbroken, angry dog at the very end. Bella’s just told him that she loves him, but that if he makes her choose, she’ll choose Edward. And then Edward, maybe sensing all hell breaking loose inside of Jake’s head, takes a stop into the Bella/Jake bubble and tells Bella that it’s take time to go. And Jake looses it, which makes Edward lose it and suddenly it’s wolf against vampire. The look at his poor doggy face gave me the biggest throat lump.

  • pepper Says:

maybe because the dialog were just plain. and it goes with the first movie.
i like the part were bella wrote to alice, but the tone in her delivery was blank – don’t really know how to describe it. plus too short on everything (edward’s absence, jacob’s time with bella, and edward & bella’s reunion. all cramp into a short film.
i remember reading the book and was really captured in the moment. if chris wanted to make the movie as close to the book, then he should have had. stephanie’s dialog had more meat in it.

  • JoanJettRox Says:

I was actually kind of sad that I didn’t cry. I came all prepared with tissues and whatnot, but…nothing. I love Chris Weitz to bits and pieces, but he just didn’t bring all the emotions into the movie :(

  • twilight4ever10 Says:

That’s strange… I think I cried about 2-3 times every time I watched it so far… I think it is soooo sad when he leaves her, and when he’s getting beaten up at the end… That’s devastating! I was sobbing so hard when Edward left Bella. My friend couldn’t believe it! It wasn’t m fault, but I think everyone in the theatre near me was staring… Hmm… I also (no offense) was yelling at some people who were Team Jacob to be quiet when he took off his shirt, cuz i couldn’t hear…. (sorry) I just love Twilight so much… It’s my life! (or most of it anyway…)

    Thanks again Lorna!!

  • JustMe Says:

Hey, i thought i was the only one not crying! I was 100% sure before the movie that i was going to cry like a crazy but i was surprised when i was only really sad, you know? There wasn’t that same kind of mood that twilight had, for example i think the scene when ed and bella are in the restaurant (twilight) was more intense than some of the kissing scenes in new moon. And i know it was nothing to do with Rob and Kristen cause i heard that italy scene was the only scene without direction (so kris and rob did it by themselves) and i think it was the only truly passionate scene in the movie. I really think Chris is great director and better that Catherine but he didn’t know how to get that exact feeling for the movie.

Sorry my over long writing and bad English.

  • Supersony Says:

Hey..do u know d interview of r/k i think after d comic con 2008.. where she says she’s really glad she took up twilight and says it twice… i think she meant something more than d movie..(umm.. i dunno.. maybe d person next to her?)

  • ababa Says:

i just miss the blue tone in twilight and the pain that edward and bella had .i just want that breaking down to be directed by Catherine Hardwicke
i think she is the one that realy understod the story

  • crystal Says:

Catherine needs to come back for Breaking Dawn to finish what she started – the romance of Bella & Edward. Only she can do that (with their help of course – lol, like they need help to act out being romantic in Breaking Dawn!)

  • Addy Says:

I’ve said long time ago that Catherine Hardwick is the only director who could capture the E/B moments. If given the chance it would easier for both director and all around her 2nd time around coz they knew what they are dealing with this time. Twlight was loved by those who saw the film first without knowing about the book. I’m an example of that. The film was spread by words of mouths by the viewing public. Twilight has won a lot of awardsso far. Should B/D be in 2 films, the 1st part should go the CH. They can get any director for the fight scene. The audience clamors for the E/B love scenes.

  • Loreley Says:

I agree with all u guys, even if I wouldn’t go as far as to say I want CH back for BD, but still, she did feel the story and it was much more intense than NM, and just.. authentic! u know?.. it made me buy it, whereas NM didn’t.

Lorna, u posted a question some time ago asking what we thought of NM and I was among the only commenters truly disappointed in it, and i kinda thought u might be feeling the same since you didn’t just outright say “I loved NM, how ’bout u guys?”. i see now i was right..

@ababa – i miss the the blue tone in twilight too! i don’t know if you just mean the sad mood, but i miss also the blue undertones that the movie had, visually, it added SO much to the overall atmosphere, and god THE SOUNDTRACK was PERFECT..
so much emotion to be shown in NM and it all lacked! so sad. the actors kept saying that they felt so at ease under CW’s direction, well maybe they were TOO at ease to put on a great performance, sorry but it feels that way.. and another one of my point of views which i stated before is that maybe when an on-camera couple goes off-camera, they don’t share the same chemistry, since most of that comes from sexual tension, and now, well.. they are obviously releasing that tension. i really missed the connection that Edward and Bella had in Twilight, its absence took SO much from the story.. :(

  • Jazzz Says:

I only cried when Edward waz getting beat up….!
It was sad n they were about to kill him..!

  • Kriisty Says:

I didn’t cry when I saw the movie, but I cried when I read the book. The movie definetly needed more emotion.I still liked the movie, though.:)

  • MadameCullen Says:

thank you Lorna, now I don’t feel guilty for not liking NM as much as I did with Twilight knowing that you too, Twifans, felt the same… I agree with all of you.

maybe the ones who cried in NM did not read the book at all! because I am kind of “a hardened heart” but I cried so so soo much while reading the break up scene.. I read it in English and in French, and had the same intense feeling! I felt like if he was breaking up with me, it was intense, that’s the word.. in the movie? nothing..
and the fighting scenes.. why so much slow motion? and what is it with Taylor and the other boys’s abs!! too much! There is a reason why the movie did not get any good review! and Eclipse will be the same.. What a shame!

    Save breaking down please :)

  • Shay Says:

Catherine Hardwicke did a great job bringing the Ed/Bella chemistry to life, or maybe it was Kristen and Rob themselves ;) , But I’m getting off topic… Chris Weitz did an awesome job with the visual stuff but, truely, I liked Twilight better then New Moon…for a number of reasons:

REASON 1- Duh, New Moon’s story line is more boring.

2- I think New Moon was over promoted; they released so many clips and pics, like I knew the whole movie before I saw it…so after watching New Moon 5 times it got boing, but I’ve seen Twilight WAYYY more than New Moon and it never gets boring.

3-Bella gets on my nerves in New Moon: she has to FORGET Edward, he’s the stupid one who left her, Bella needs to realize that and stop jumping off ciffs just to hear his voice. That gets me angry, Bella is strong but she acts like she NEEDS a man in her life when she doesn’t.

I did cry at New Moon. Because, #1, it reminded me of the book and how much pain Bella’s suffering, #2, Kristen Stewart is exacty how I pictured Bella, so depressed and hurt, Kristen seriously made me cry with those facial expressions and #3, I just HAD to cry…it’s New Moon!

Sorry for babbling, I can’t help it.

  • Hannah Says:

In the book yes, the film… I tried but just couldn’t!

I found this link on a youtube video, i’ve never heard of formspring and I don’t know if this is official or what anyway heres the link…

    http://www.formspring.me/KristenStew

  • joy Says:

i think the main problem with NM were the scenes between B/E -rob and kristen still had the amazing chemistry like in twilight but because of the way CW directed the movie scenes were too short and felt a bit rushed trough, and i didn’t like the camera angles during the kissing scenes-
maybe with david slade it won’t be like that

inspite all of that i still liked the movie a lot,the soundtrack especially

  • Isabella Says:

well that makes me feel better i thought I was the only one that did not cried and I even felt heart colded, but u are right… i hadn’t thought about it like that…. but still i will so buy the DVD i loved new moon but u are right it didnt depress us like it should have and that was the only dissapointment to me… i ALMOST LIKE ALMOST cried though in the break up scene with Bella and Edward and when Bella started to wander around in the forest saying “Edward… Edward…. Edward….” that almost killed me…. but yeah i didnt cried

  • end Says:

I watched New Moon on the big screen fourth time, but still so…plain to me. Maybe cuz’ I love edward aka Rpatz too much so I didnt give attention to E/J. I’m sooo Team Edward…and Yess..NM very dissapointed for me cuz too rush, too lack of interaction E/B in the end and too much jacob abs..(sorry Team Jacob)

yes its kind of “BlockBuster Movies”, more big budget with CGI and many other character (wolfpack), but its lost of chemistry between E/B. I think if R/K get more space to pull out their chemistry in the of the story, it’s more beautifull. Their chemistry in the beginning very..very good especially the kiss after bday party (their kiss so passionately PAIN and then edward so cold when reply “Iloveu” from Bella -I almost cry, but I didnt)

the soundtrack are GOOD but I think..are not slurred with the scene (except Possibility – Lykke li – Bella w/ empty face and the season change…that’s beautifully hurt)
I miss Rob’s voice in the death and dinner scene..I miss Flightless Bird American Mouth in the Prom scene…

Sorry I’m babbling too long, I can’t help it

  • macha Says:

aisha: OMG! Like how the hell do they get that picture?! LOL. Is it even them in the first place?!

WOW… They really went to that extend…

  • end Says:

@ aisha…sorry I doubt it. it’s already discuss in another site. that’s pic/vid are part of vid about love celebration wtf, in italy or french…

  • cheryth Says:

My eyes just got wet … but no tears rolled down on my face! hehe .. the break up scene was so sad!

  • bo Says:

Yes Agreed I think it’s because CW didn’t get it. He didn’t get the story. He didn’t get the concept of it. He missed out. I think the director wasn’t convinced by the story and he was faking the emotions… I hope BD will get a director who is totally and sincerely into the seriese.

  • Andrea Says:

I thought I was not ‘normal’ when I didn’t cry watching NM. The book is a different story, I can’t read the no Edward part yet.
Twilight was in theater for a long time (Nov – around Feb/March) compares to NM (Nov – Dec)
    Hope, Eclipse will be better.

  • Georgina Says:

Oh wow, so i’m not the only weird one, lol I watch NM 4x and can’t cry at all, I swear I try…but lorna u’re right the emotions just aren’t there! When reading the book I bawled my eyes out, esp when Jake almost kissed Bella in the truck, after cliff-diving, and Edward’s voice said “be happy”….and they cut it out in the movie! :’(

  • sara Says:

i didnt cry.but there’s something definately going on with my eyes at that moment. but,it just didnt come out.

  • Oracle Says:

It is very unlikely that Catherine will be brought back for BD. The cast thought she was too moody, unpredictable, and unorganized. I think that’s why they like CW so much because he was very calm and organized. However, NM lacked passion and wardrobe and makeup was hideous. Plus, Catherine cant be trusted because she constantly reports Rob and Kristen’s doings. NOT COOL. But the lady can orchestrate a good love scene!!!

  • edangel Says:

NM was not a very emotional movie, Though Rob and kris had done a great job… Also i felt the intimate scenes like the kissing scenes were not so clear like in twilight except for the kissing scene in Italy. Either their shoulders or their heads hide the beautiful moment, i felt the camera angles must have been properly focussed inorder to bring the scene alive….
Though NM was closer to the book compared to Twilight i felt something was missing in there…. Could have been better…

  • Luvrobsten Says:

Yeah I agree with most of you…I cried a lot when reading new moon but couldn’t cry when watching the movie…I hope eclipse and breaking dawn to be better…

  • Danni Says:

    Lorna!

Post the released clip & images of The Runaways and the released clip of Welcome To The Rileys. :)

  • Jessy Says:

I think that KH could have done NM better maybe becouse she is a women we are more romantic.

End no i didn’t cry y would have if the part in the book where she kind of reyects him becouse she is so hurt when he firt left was in the movie. That could have been a awoseme scene.

Like the first kiss between bella end Ed oh men every time a wacht it still gives me the chills
I too feel in NM sometingh was missin …. to bad
I have my hopes up for BD though.

  • aniep Says:

seemed scene in new moon has not touched…. and a better kissing scene in the twilight…and actually kissing scene as before parting and reunion from italy is full passion…and the hair bella on the new moon in one scene.a parting of her hair changing to change…. sorry my english not good .. hopefully easy on eclips and breaking down to see the shortcomings in ther new moon.. thxs

  • Isabel Says:

I loved the movie but I also didn’t cry. I thought for sure I’d be bawling my eyes out on the breakup scene, but not a single tear. I think I was just too mesmerized by Edward.

  • salie Says:

I also felt the same way as Lorna. the movie lacks the passion or emotion compared to twilight. the book is more my favorite compared to the movie. i really hope the next director for breaking dawn will give justice to meyer’s book.

  • goth_girl_101 Says:

I wasn t in love with the movie i didn t cry once there was no chemisrty between rob and kristin as much as thre was in twilight and the director skipped some of th emost important parts. I m noy gonna say i loved it but im not gonna say i hated it

  • raven Says:

    hey i didnt either! :D
