The Golden Compass Sets Its Course for New Moon

The Golden Compass Official Poster

While watching the film The Golden Compass on HBO Asia, one can understand the reasons why Summit Entertainment chose The Golden Compass director Chris Weitz to direct the Twilight sequel — New Moon

The Golden Compass’ palette of cold colors, its majestic sets, its fantastic casting and costumes, the gigantic huge bears that required CG, the fact that the film is also based on a book… All of these details and its similarities to New Moon can prove invaluable to the efficient production and shooting of the second installment to the Twilight Saga by The Golden Compass director.

However, while he showcases his technical expertise on the film based on Philip Pullman’s bestselling and award-winning novel, Chris Weitz also reveals his glaring weaknesses in The Golden Compass — the lack of storytelling abilities and emotional heartbeat — which can make a visually stunning film totally ineffective in its ability to affect its audiences.

Still, Chris Weitz directed The Golden Compass several years ago. I dearly hope that his storytelling skills have sharpened during that intervening period.

I hope so too. I saw Chris being interviewed and it sounded like he’s changing quite a bit in New Moon. I hope the movie tells the story the way it is.

The 1st one, Twilight, I felt like they should have included the scene where Bella fainted in the classroom, when they were doing bloodtyping.

I guess we’ll see how New Moon is like. Rob said it’s gonna be dark and gonna live up to the hype, so I believe him, but we’ll see.

I forgot to say, I didn’t like The Golden Compass. Like you said, lack of storytelling but the costumes and props were superb.

I didn’t see The Golden Compass, so I can’t add anything there. But I also liked Hardwicke’s Twilight (I think as I watched, I was unconsciously filling in the gaps from the book). So I’m pretty sure I’m going to like New Moon, too. So far, it sounds like a grittier tale with a lot more pretty boys! As long as Weitz nails the love story between Edward and Bella, I’m on board.

Hmm..I’m worried. I haven’t seen the Golden Compass, but both emotinal heartbeat and storytelling abilities are CRUCIAL to New Moon. If I don’t cry during the scene where Edward leaves her…then thats going to be problem…
