Robert Pattinson is a Catholic Who Believes in Abstinence

Slap me silly, but, I assumed that, since Rob was from England, he was raised as a Protestant. To my surprise, I found out that he was well acquainted with the Pope, the rosary and the subject of confession. Not that he enumerated the three during his Movies.ie interview, but, any regular Catholic would be familiar with the topics.
And, he would most probably recognize most of the practices in this A Wish and A Prayer for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart video.
So how did the subject of Rob’s religion come up? When the interviewer noted the pervasive presence of abstinence in the Twilight books, he hypothesized that Stephenie Meyer’s Mormon background came into play.
With regards to Rob’s preparation for his character as a method actor, Rob admits to taking on Edward’s abstinence, “Absolutely, yeah.”
Perhaps the fact that the interviewer, Paul Byrne, is from Ireland, where Catholicism is one of the most practiced religions, made Rob comfortable enough to confess, “I’m a Catholic as well.”
And, he adds a bombshell, “I mean, I completely believe in it.” And then he laughs gently. (go to 3:16)
My jaw has just dropped to the ground, just like in those Looney Tunes cartoons. Say that again?

This fact helped me believe that it is out of Rob’s character to sleep with just anybody in order to answer some booty call (as what some people in the industry perceived him…cough…Lainey…cough.)
I’m not saying he’s a Saint cause obviously he’s very human, but he’s definitely a person who values the element of Love and Commitment in expressing the physical aspect of his romantic relationship.

This comes as a really big surprise, I mean I suppose its easy to admit to being catholic, but declaring that you totally believe in it, that just put my respect for him on a new high. Maybe he’s also praying for him and kristen to be together.

off guard, and the way the interviewer was making
the question made him think this was the correct thing to say without getting deeper in the matter. He was nervous and didn’t really know what to say in that moment…that was funny in a way. Well thats what I think.

Um…I do believe Rob was serious about being Catholic (why else would he mention it?), but if you watch the video he was clearly, clearly joking around when he said he believed in abstinence.
Rob jokes around a lot in interviews…so I wouldn’t take this to the bank as evidence of his true feelings on the subject.

Sorry to disagree but I think both the question and his reaction were meant in a sarcastic manner. I think it’s a British interview hence the typical sense of humour. Rob had a g/f Nina Schubert who was 3 years older than him and they lived together in London. They dated for 3 years till about 2007. While I don’t think he’s a womanizer I very much doubt he’s still a virgin who believes in abstinence. Such belief is also not as common in Europe as it is in the US right now.

Did you really, really not understand that he was being sarcastic? I saw this months ago. He is Catholic, but he was completely playing along and being sarcastic when he said he believes in abstinence. You can tell from his face and tone of voice. It’s completely clear. Rob lived with a girl for three years and I’m pretty sure they weren’t sleeping in different bedrooms.
Once again, his sarcasm is crystal clear.

In Europe the belief of abstinance isnt as big as it is in the US. Couples live together, even when they’re not married or engaged, and have sex together.
It looks like he was put on the spot there. Kind of an uncomfortable questions there, haha. And in an recent (well, actually it’s a couple of months old) interview about his character, Edward Cullen he said: “He’s a 108 year old virgin, so obviosly he has a problem”.
And then the interview on youtube called The Sex Interview or The F*** Interview. He’s asked on a scale of one to ten, how good sex is, and he answered: “On a scale of f****** awesomness it would defenitly make the top”.
Since he has not been married, and seemed to have a pretty good answer there, i don’t think he really believes in it.

It makes him even more beautiful and unusual, yes he’s a virgin. The interviewer said Stephenie is a Mormon and believes in Abstinence and Edward and Bella don’t try sex until they’re married, then he asked Robbert if he believed in abstinence since he was a Methodist and Robbert said absolutely and he had double the reason because he was also a Catholic.
It’s refreshing, especially when everyone you know lost their virginity years ago and one of the hottest guy, of many girls obsession, is a virgin makes it better again – and makes it actually cool.
Actually, that’s a strange parallel and likeness, between them. Edward was old fashioned, and I think he obviously believed in abstinence because he wouldn’t have sex with Bella until she married him. I bet it makes all the people who lost their virginity in a hurry wish they had kept it for The One.
Many here seem intent on believing Robert was being sarcastic. What is it about his face or tone of voice that suggested sarcasm? He said he absolutely believed in it and that he was also Catholic, and he was speaking gently.
People who have worked with him have seen he is painfully shy, so that could be another factor to why he wants to believe in abstinence strongly. I think people don’t want to think he’s a virgin, but people swoon over Edward who was, and loved his old fashioned ways, and in today’s world people lose their virginity at 14 to someone they don’t even love.
Love and sex are suppose to go together and if you have never had sex without true love you will never know what real passion is or never know really what Plato meant and what Shaksepeare meant.
What comes to mind now is the movie City of Angels where the angel Seth became a human to be with the woman he loved. When she died Seth told the other angel that he would do it again and he would rather have only one touch then to never have it at all.
Why SHOULD one let someone else inside them completley if that person doesn’t love you completely?

I got interested in Rob a few months ago and did research him as he looked so run down and sad in some interviews. I thought Summit was nuts not to take better care of him. He only was treated like a star once New Moon started.
Rob answered a question from a reporter about whether there was off screen chemistry between him and Kristen at the UK by saying he was “completely asexual” as in celibate. He has been brought up with morals and with the idea you wait for the right woman to share your body and soul with. I am married to a Catholic. This is a normal belief for devout Catholics. Most Catholics don’t vote for people who support abortion either. Rob may or not be a virgin but he is trying to uphold the teaching of his faith.
Would you mock a Muslim for similar ideals? Catholics are always under fire.
In a sexed up cynical and sordid world, we need more decent role models for our youth to not think of sex as a sport. It will cut down AIDS and unwanted pregnancies as well as broken hearts and teenage motherhood.
God bless Robert for being honest and trying to be a good guy. He could have lied or thought about his “image”. We need to return to the morals and values that this country was built upon.
Our kids deserve the same country as what we enjoyed. Our kids are being s—xed up earlier and earlier. When youth was expected to be celibate in earlier decades…guess what THEY WERE usually.

In the Paul Byrne interview (You Tube) movies.ie he asked Robert if he believed in abstinence since he was a METHOD ACTOR not a Methodist.
All I know is that Rob has been extremely kind to the fans, very sweet, never rude, has a great reputation, close friends and family and his morals are why he was able to handle the sudden fame. Take a look at these beautiful videos that support the close friendship/infatuation/crush that these two have for each other. I think that Rob found out that Kristen was not as sweet and nice as he assumed, and may not be sure about her as a serious girlfriend.
They are friends with chemistry and they went through a lot with the movie and would stay up talking about how to make it a great movie. Rob said Hardwicke (director) told him to stay away from Kristen (they put them at separate hotels) as she was only 17 “you’ll go to jail” and Michael is my friend.
Rob knows that Kristen advocated for him to get the part and he owes her big time. He is young and may just want to not be tied down or wants to make sure she is a nice girl.
Maybe he lost interest in her….she sure looks less wholesome than she did. Just because she played a rocker in Runaways, does not mean that she should come to 2009 Comic Con in San Diego looking like [one]

Robert Pattinson is a romantic one man woman and not interested in one night stands with strangers as per his own comments in interviews. Many people believe that promiscuous sex has adversely affected our society. It’s not supposed to be taken lightly and with many. If you are a person of faith, it is viewed as the mystical union of bodies and souls. Robert has stated that he has many female platonic friends. After all, dating is supposed to be about getting to know one another and having fun.
Robert brought the character of Edward, brilliantly to life along with the hearts of many. In a coarse and cynical sexed up world, Twilight still managed to be a hit with no nudity, sex, drug use, cursing, violence or gore. A movie about love, commitment, doing the right thing, loyalty, redemption, abstinence, souls, traditional values and soul mates triumphing over extreme obstacles; won the hearts and minds of movie goers world-wide.
Summit, the gossip rags, paparazzi and Hollywood are about making money. They want this intellectual, introspective, quiet, genteel and decent guy to be seen as a hot single player.
The gossip rags and haters in Hollywood are trying to derail Robert. After all, he significantly contributed to making 380 million for Summit.The other producers and studios are perhaps worried about the competition.
One can only assume that they want their projects and stars to do well at the box office and are playing dirty. The paparazzi and gossip rags will do whatever it takes to tear Robert down from his sudden rise to fame. It is their lively-hood.

OH but if he said he was gay, everyone would believe that no questions asked. Don’t judge others by your own actions or morals.
All I am saying is that if you look at his interviews from 2007, on the set of Twilight in the very beginning and his comments about commitment, talking about the books in very Biblical terms, his comments and interviews not to mention his mannerisms and awkwardness show a shy unmacho,quirky, sweet genteel guy. Edi Gathegi, Ashley, Kellan, Justin Chow and Rachelle have all eluded to him being shy and backwards. Sorry folks, Rob is not a stud. Thank God. He is just a decent good guy trying to lead a moral life.

He made a very artsy movie “Little Ashes” it was not hard core. He though nobody would see it. He also stated how uncomfortable he was doing it. That role led to him being depressed and losing his mojo. He blew it after Harry Potter by not getting parts. Then he did Little Ashes not knowing that he would be an international star from the next movie a little indie film called Twilight. Like many Catholics, he has issues and conflicts. Many Catholics think there is nothing wrong with drinking, smoking and cursing as long as you don’t commit more serious sins. Also he is very self-conscious and insecure still. He is just starting to bloom and become a man.

This is not the only instance. He also said it at the UK Twi premiere about being asexual when asked by the reporter. He described the bedroom scene in Twilight on the set behind the scenes as it getting a little too intimate and Edward jumps out the window, “which is exactly what I would do”. The thing that bothers me is how Kristen Stewart would be blessed by God to meet this sweet guy and get her hooks into him. Why couldn’t he meet Taylor Swift first. He was on Seacrest’s show and she was supposed to be there at the same time.

Hi, I am unsure if Robert was fully aware that people would take his statement so serious. But regarless of that,if he is a virgin that is very sweet i am glad he found jesus and has something to hold on to strongly, but people really Rob’s a virgin come on…… it’s not impossible but unlikly I think he meant it is a good idea to not push sex or any sexual contact until your ready as what the author meant. The fact that he brings up that he is Catholic all on his own tells me that there’s some conviction there. Many people are raised under the Christian/Catholic faith but do not take it seriously and do not mention it. I don’t know, I just feel that if God was not a priority in his life, he would not have chosen to mention his faith, when the topic at hand was irrelevant to religion. And on the abstinence issue? I wouldn’t be too sure that Rob has already lost his virginity. I think it could go either way, honestly. Yes, he’s an incredibly attractive man, but think about how self-conscious he is. That, and he has only been in one serious relationship. Before you claim his words are sarcastic, I’d think again. Knowing him, his issues with self-esteem, and his VERY reserved nature, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Rob was saving it for marraige. Just sayin’.

I just wanted to point out that Robert’s statement about being Catholic is probably being construed wrongly.
Roughly, here’s what is said:
INTERVIEWER: “I mean, you, being the method actor that you are, take on your character’s abstinence…(ect.)”
RP: (Agrees with this, then goes on to say…) “I’m Catholic as well.” (and then) “I mean,I totally believe in it.”
Okay. First of all, method acting is a style of acting where the actor attempts to feel and think all of the things that the character s/he is portraying feels. This is in order to give a more “lifelike” performance.
Notice that the interviewer says that Robert is “taking on” the abstinence BECAUSE OF his being a method actor. He then goes on to talk about Robert and Edward as the same person because of this. Robert agrees and continues the conversation in the first person (”I”) because he’s still talking about himself AS EDWARD. Make sense? Watch it again with this in mind — it’ll click.
And if you think that this means Robert is becoming like Edward in real life, entirely, as a permanent fixture of his personality — it doesn’t really make any sense, does it? What about all the other roles Robert has played in other movies? Robert Pattinson is a method actor all the time, not just with Twilight. That’s his style of acting. So thinking that Pattinson is turning into Edward for real is as absurd as believing that he’s also turning into Cedric Diggory, Salvador Dali, Tyler Whatshisname from Remember Me (lol, sorry — I can’t remember.), etc.
Does this mean that Pattinson absolutely isn’t Catholic? Of course not. But this interview says as much about his own personal beliefs about Catholicism as it does about his own personal beliefs about Buddhism. Which is nothing.

Okay, I just discovered this video while doing a search online after someone told me Rob was Catholic. Like the author of the blog, I had assumed he’d be Protestant. I loved finding out we share the same faith! He’s more and more perfect every day.

Now, as far as the abstinence issue goes – I don’t know that he’s clear enough on whether or not he is saving himself for marriage. I like to think he is. I have a few male friends who are saving themselves… real honest to goodness awesome-in-every-way guys, not dorks who can’t get girls. I’m also saving myself for marriage. It’s not an impossible task. Kudos to Rob if he is actually following through on what Catholicism teaches!
He strikes me as a very honest, thoughtful gentleman who was comfortable enough in this interview to admit to some beliefs that are not at all popular in our “Hollywood” culture. Just admitting he’s Catholic was a big deal!
As far as his role as Dali goes… it was hardly gay porn – as someone above stated. I’ve seen it, so I know. Actors always take on roles that are not even close to how they live their real lives. That’s why it’s called “acting.” I also gather from interviews that it’s not a role he “talks up.” Maybe he regrets it? Only Rob knows for sure.
By all accounts, he comes from a tight knit loving family. His parents are still very much in love (as he has stated in interviews)and he has a very high opinion of marriage.
I’m gonna give Rob the benefit of the doubt and say he’s man of sound morals who is guided by his faith.

The interviewer said “being the method actor that you are, you obviously believe in abstinance as well as it is part of your character and you are saving yourself for that right woman”> There was nothing about taking on the character’s abstinence, just asking if he relates to it. He also said that platonic relationships are the best kind as you really get to know the person without complications. He also said that he wants to be a young dad in Japan. He said on Ellen 2008 that he wants to have a girlfriend, but “nobody wants to commit to me”.
Personally, it is really strange how everyone refuses to believe that he could be just a moral nice guy. There are plenty of them. Unfortunately, society has indoctrinated people (especially young ones) to think morals and values is a thing of the past. Rob kiddingly said on one of the first interviews that Edward is gay. He said “I’m just gay” when Kristen shot her mouth off about the character being impotent (sweet little thing that she is). It is pretty pitiful that it is uncool for someone to be old-fashioned, selective, romantic, full of faith. I am not saying that he is or is not. I am saying that he promoting the teaching of his faith like you are supposed to do. Unlike most pretend Christians, he knows what his confirmation vows meant.

This was before he started trying to insulate himself and not be as open as he was when he want around the US on mall and radio tour. He doesn’t understand that the fans fell for him just as he is. He thinks his popularity is due only to playing Edward. People responded to how candid,nice and different he is. Hopefully he’ll survive the debauchery, drugs and dipsticks in Hollywood.

He may be joking but why say it then? He was just too young and uncool enough to just blurt it out. When he was asked about it later…he said he speaks too much NOT I was kidding. The paps have bugged him about his faith..The interviewers in Italy asked him how Twilight is similar to Catholic beliefs. He started realizing very quickly that the twisted world we live in would rather think he does a midget, 2 guys, a squirrel and a lesbian nightly then that he was raised well, believes in the teachings of his faith, is not a hypocrite, and just has not met the right girl yet. Bully for him and bravo for having the guts and genuine openess.. To have principles in this super sexed up, screwed up world is impressive. Rob is what he seems. Decent, sweet, shy,funny and refreshing..

Coming from a Catholic.I feel that he’s not joking .Some say he’s “joking”,yet I think for some odd reason it’s just because they wish it weren’t true.Most likely a true catholic wouldn’t joke around with that kind of stuff and claim they are a catholic ,yet say that you aren’t following the rules would be hypocritical.

Well, I don’t want to ruin things for you, folks, but there is another video on youtube which shows a French interview with Rob where he states “I’d want to have sex with my girlfriend” so um, since he’s been with Kristen Stewart now for almost a year and a half (yes, he has been, stop hating her, she’s most incredible).. you get my point.
Just bc he might actually be Catholic doesn’t mean he has to be a virgin (I am Catholic and am not).
He only answered that he took on Edward’s abstinence (which can be from other things than sex, too and in the context means only for the time of preparing and filming twilight) and then basically got trapped by the interviewer, he never answered the “saving yourself question” with a definite yes, but laughed (haha, what an indicator to irony/ sarcasm) and dodged the question.
Would you have told the interviewer “hell, no, I have sex all the time!” ? Seriously? I guess not.
So, well, sorry again. But he is definitely definitely not a virgin!
(though I’m not saying he slept around either)

I think he may believe in Abstinence, but probably does not practice it. You know he had sex with Nina Schubert when he was living with her. Look at his face. He knows he is saying he believes in it, but is not a virgin himself.

Being a Catholic myself (an probably old fashioned), I have remembered Rob and Kristen(who are both Catholic)in my prayers. I admit, after viewing Rob in more “moral” type movies like The Twilight Saga, I am dissapointed
when he acts in films that are more “risque”, like Little Ashes, Bel Ami, which will be released in 2011, and the upcoming Cosmopolis.
