New Moon Unofficial Film Script — Severed Ties (Part 1)
SEQ 06. INT. Cullen’s Living Room. Alice, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett are playing their version of chess, while Carlisle reads and Esme putters around the room.
ALICE
(has vision) No! (to Cullens) Edward has decided.ESME
Oh no. Poor Edward.CARLISLE
We must respect his decision. Family members support each other.ALICE
Aren’t families supposed to stay together too? Isn’t Bella part of our family?CARLISLE
The situation has changed. We have to stay strong for Edward.EMMETT
I don’t get it. What?ROSALIE
Good. (to Emmett) C’mon, we have to pack.
SEQ 07. INT. Bella’s Bedroom. Bella wakes up suddenly as if recovering from a nightmare, eyes frantically searching for Edward, before visibly relaxing when she sees Edward near the window. His face is cold and resolved. A streak of sunlight hits Edward, making him sparkle, causing Bella to gasp at the sight.
BELLA
You’re so beautiful. I can’t believe you’re mine.EDWARD
I have to go.BELLA
(quoting Shakespeare) Wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day.
Therefore stay yet; thou need’st not to be gone.EDWARD
I have to leave you.BELLA
What do you mean?EDWARD
We’re leaving.BELLA
Okay. Let me just grab some clothes and my toothbrush.EDWARD
No, Bella. I mean my family and myself.BELLA
(angrily) What happened with Jasper — that was nothing, Edward! Nothing!EDWARD
(with quiet despair) You’re right. It was exactly what was to be expected.BELLA
You promised! You promised that you would stay!EDWARD
As long as that was best for you.
Bella goes nearer to cup Edward’s face.
BELLA
You’re the very best part of my life.
Edward breaks away and moves away from Bella.
EDWARD
This is a mistake.BELLA
It’s not a mistake!
Edward steels himself and then turns to face Bella.
EDWARD
I don’t want you anymore, Bella.BELLA
You… don’t… want… me?EDWARD
No.BELLA
Well, that changes things.
Bella attempts to control herself, but, tears start to run down her face. Her thoughts are in turmoil as she tries to put up a verbal defense, but, her insecurities get the best of her, and her face collapses as she believes that Edward doesn’t want her anymore.
BELLA
Don’t. Don’t do this.
Edward moves towards the window to turn away from the sight, fearful he would not have the strength to go on.
EDWARD
Promise me one thing.BELLA
Anything.EDWARD
Take care of yourself. Don’t do anything reckless or stupid.BELLA
I will.EDWARD
Goodbye, Bella.
Edward can’t stand it and turns back to look at Bella. He makes a move as if to kiss her, but, he moves away hurriedly towards the window. Bella hurries after him.
BELLA
Wait!
Suddenly, Edward is in front of her.
EDWARD
In time, you won’t remember me. It will be as if I’d never existed. Take care of yourself.
Edward kisses her on the forehead. Then suddenly, he’s gone.
Bella slowly collapses to the floor, finally releasing the torrent of tears she has tried to hold in. Her form twitches uncontrollably as sobs wrack through her body.
SEQ 08. EXT. Front of Cullen’s house. Early Morning. Cars and jeep with luggage. All the Cullens are dressed to travel and waiting for Edward. Edward arrives running from the Swan house.
EMMETT
Guess what, Edward? Rosalie and me are thinking of going to Africa on another honeymoon!ESME
Hush, Emmett.CARLISLE
We’ll do whatever needs to be done, Edward.ALICE
Can I please say goodbye? It won’t take a minute.EDWARD
I don’t think that would be wise, Alice.ALICE
I’ll miss her so much. Please, I –JASPER
Alice. Let’s go.EMMETT
Race, race, race! Let’s burn some rubber!ROSALIE
She wasn’t good for you or the family.ESME
(hugs Edward) Oh, Edward.EMMETT
(passing by in his jeep) Got a head start on you, little bro! You can’t outrun me with this baby!
SEQ a. EXT. Highway. Convoy of Carlisle and Rosalie’s cars, then Emmett’s jeep and Edward’s car. Edward suddenly turns his car and goes opposite from where the Cullens are headed.
ALICE
(from Emmett’s jeep) Edward! No! Don’t go after her!
SEQ b. INT. Carlisle’s Car.
CARLISLE
Just let him be to sort things out. He’ll come back when he’s ready.
SEQ c. EXT. Highway. Emmett’s Jeep.
EMMETT
Where’s Edward off to? I hate it when you guys do that. Why can’t you talk like regular vampires?
SEQ a. EXT. Front of Cullen’s House. Afternoon. Coming from school, Bella hurriedly exits her truck and rushes to the door only to find it unlocked.
SEQ b. INT. Inside the Cullen’s House. Bella rushes through the entrance and up the stairs, which are now devoid of furniture, paintings and decor.
SEQ 09c. INT. Edward’s bedroom. Bella stares at the empty white room.
BELLA
He’s gone.
SEQ . EXT. Forest. Early evening. It’s raining steadily. Bella runs through the forest, instinctively trying to find their special meadow. She doesn’t notice a big shadow following her. Images of Edward and their time together flash through her mind.
SEQ . EXT. Forks sky. The moon has gone into new moon phase. It gets dark. Bella has slowed to a walk. She slowly collapses and lies semi-unconscious on the forest bed. Before she totally loses consciousness, she spies a large dark shape coming nearer. The last thing she remembers is seeing a wolf-shaped necklace.
JACOB BLACK
Bella, are you hurt?

Lorna Lopez aka ATwilightKiss’ Notes This script version is my attempt to reconcile the literary world with the more visual medium of film. Just like in the Lord of the Rings, changes will be made to accommodate a driven story line, time constraints, and attention to character development.
Jacob Black One minor change is instead of Sam Uley finding Bella in the forest, I’ve changed it to Jacob Black because I feel it’s more important to establish the character of Jacob and his relationship with Bella.
The Parting Scene The parting scene is in the bedroom in reference to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — when the two famous lovers say their farewells to each other. There will be lots of references to the classic love story since it is obviously a major factor in the writing of Stephenie Meyer’s New Moon.
Stephenie Meyer chose the path still within eyesight of the house as the parting scene in the book. Although some of you would like the meadow to be the background for this scene, I have to point out a major concern — the meadow is located in an isolated area. Edward, who is always concerned for Bella’s safety, will most probably not bring her there because he knows he has to leave immediately. So he must choose a place where he knows she’ll be safe even when he departs.
Although this script is based on the Twilight saga, it will be faithful to the spirit of the books, but, not necessarily be faithful in every way as to how it’s presented in the books per se.
Thanks to the Lord of the Rings Team Once again, I am thankful to Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the Lord of the Rings scriptwriting team, for their commentary on the extended DVDs; because, aside from their passion and commitment to being faithful to the books, they were also driven to push the story forward for the film medium.

Thanks, Toni! And yes, I’ve heard the rumor, but I don’t understand the logic.
As I commented somewhere — There’s so many CG and simple ways to get around whatever physical requirements are needed for Jacob in New Moon.
Something as simple as standing on apple boxes can make Taylor seem taller, or a camera angle would do it as well or a body double for physical closeups.
Lord Of The Rings did it successfully. And they had to contend with height and size disparity between hobbits and humans. Much more complicated, in my opinion.
And, the fact that Taylor Lautner looks young is an advantage. Jacob is really supposed to be younger than Bella. It’s perfect that Taylor is of the same age. As Stephenie Meyer describes Jacob, he is supposed to look youthful, just that his body is more developed and advanced for his normal age.
Can you tell I’m on Team Taylor? LOL. I thought he did a fantastic job on Twilight and there’s exciting enmity between his character and Edward. He and Robert have chemistry too, just the testosterone type.

This is all wrong!!! Sam is the one to find Bella in the meadow!! And Edward tells Bella he’s leaving her in the meadow!!! That’s when she falls asleep and Sam finds her!!!

This is great really, but I hope they have Edward tell Bella in the meadow. Then I’m fine with Jacob finding her instead of Sam. I hope with new moon they find a way to show Edward when he’s away from Bella, how he feels and what he’s going through as well as Bella’s depression.
I also really want to see the conflict between Edward and Jacob in the end.

Looking good so far, altho I was so dissatisfied with Twilight the movie (story elements & direction) that I sort of want them to do a quick Twilight recap at the start of New Moon to make sure the important elements are covered. (Similar to how they covered plot of “The Hobbit” in the first LOTR movie.) The importance of the “meadow scene” for one, needs to be established as it sets the stage for the scene with Laurent & the werewolves and Bella finding out from Laurent that Victoria is after her.
Also allows for more Edward Cullen screen time.
Altho I agree that we need to miss Edward in New Moon as that is the point of the story. I do want them to cover the Italy segment extensively tho — the Volturi/Italy part of the book was quite exciting & interesting for me.

Actually, it was also my dissatisfaction with the slow pacing, lack of action scenes, etc. of Twilight that made me start writing this New Moon script. *hint* I’ll be using the meadow location for another objective to clearly show a change in Bella. Still scribbling on Part 3.
And, I have ideas about how to flesh out the Volturi scenes that I think would be visually exciting, which will be Part 4.

Wow, I just had to post. Even though it does not completely follow New Moon it still had everything it needed in there. I see where your going by skipping less intense parts and adding to the story to make it more intense. It was really good. Great job, I think this would make an awesome script for New Moon, I really hope they do something along the lines of what you did.

Taylor Lautner fits perfect as Jacob Black, especially in this book. I can imagine him saying & doing all this. I can’t wait & i’m glad that Chris Weitz & Melissa are trying the hardest to stay close with the book. It’s hard to fit it in a 2 hr movie. I hope Robert is still in this too. No one should be replaced, no matter how hot the replacement can be.

I really like what youve written so far, and i like some of the changes you’ve made. However, I really think that the parting scene should be in the woods, like the author originally intended, then Bella should wander from there. I also think that we shouldnt know about why or how the Cullens left until the very end, to build drama. It will make people think he really didn’t want her. I hope you will keep Edward in the script somehow!

You are changing some characters much more than they are allowed to be, due to the story. Rosalie, who is the only character of the Cullen family who is not complete in the book,and the only Cullen who is bad and selfish and annoying, and you are making her even worse. I think that her personality should be better described, and let her improve as the time passes, let people see her reasons, at least to feel that there is something behind her bad behavior. And so, I think that Aro should never reveal his true thoughts and he should maintain the good cop in the story, like Caius should be the bad cop, and Marcus the utterly bored one. Also Jacob must not ever kiss Bella, and she should remain faithful to her true love, without compromises (they are just her thoughts , when she’s afraid of loosing Jacob). And of course Bella shouldn’t be aware of the fact that Edward loves her until the moment they meet again. New Moon is a sad part of her life, and Bella’s pain gives it beauty. If you change the anticipation of Edwards coming back and question of his love toward Bella, there won’t be such a great comeback. Audience should feel her pain, and see her doubts, because things would never have happened like that if she new all along.

If this is the script then it must be an early draft. Peter was at the Twi convention in LA on Sunday and he said that Carlisle and Emmett are both holding Jasper back from attacking Bella. He said it was going to look great because Jackson really got into it. Also, he said the scene with Carlisle stitching up Bella was one of his favorites and it’s not in this version. I’m not buying this is the final script.

I really doubt this is the real thing, it is too random. The writing doesnt flow like a real conversation would. Even if this was in any way being used for the movie it needs a lot of work to make it right.

I think this movie will be better then Twilight but i don’t think it will be very good. I wanted the love scenes, like where Edward asks Bella to marry him and she says yes and where bella doesn’t believe that she is awake and Edward has to prove to her that she is. I want all those scenes in the movie. Nonetheless i am going to see the movie. The Twilight series is my life… please start adding more love scenes in the 3rd movie because that one is my favorite book because it is all about love and the marriage!!! So please try to incorporate more of that!

I’m sorry after reading that I had to say something. I hope and pray that wasn’t even close to the actual script they are using. The entire thing is written backwards. Romeo & Juliet are before the party and it wouldn’t make sense for them to be all close and happy if the scene is after the party which causes the whole mess that makes him leave her. I mean it’s cute, but not accurate enough to the point that it almost doesn’t make sense. Sorry if this came off harsh.

I think the new moon movie will be really good.New moon wasn’t my fave book of the series because edward wasn’t in the book that much and i Like the books most because of the chesmestry between bella and edward their love and passion for each other and this time with the book new moon they didn’t have so much of that.I just hope that the movie will be better than the book and show more of edward then the book does and tell what he is going through and how he is dealing with it. I can’t wait 4 the movie it will be near my b-day my b-day is november 18th so my parents r taking me to go see it a a b-day gift yay!

I am so insane about Twilight and New Moon every time I talk about it I feel really happy!!! I have seen Twilight 14 times and at the moment I am reading the Twilight book and I am so close to finishing it because it is a very addictive book because once you start you can’t stop. I want to go see New Moon at the cinemas again but my Mum keeps on saying no I don’t know why because she said that she really enjoyed it. I can’t wait till New Moon comes out on DVD, Eclipse comes out in the cinemas, Eclipse comes out on DVD, Breaking Dawn comes out on cinemas and last but not least Breking Dawn comes out on DVD. I’m glad that they changed the script cause as soon as i started reading this one i knew it was different from wat they used in the movie, and the movie is closer to the book then this script
