The Silent Awakening
By ATwilightKiss

My quiet unearthly existence was momentarily disturbed. The unfamiliar sensation made me unsure for an instant, uncertain of what could possibly cause the unheard of occurrence. When I could not fathom the reason, I turned my attention back to the gray skies that were visible from the high windows of the Volturi court.

Thousands of years of being undead without my beloved had withered my soul. I could not even summon a second of mirth at the thought. A vampire with a soul. The very irony of it was incomprehensible to most of our kind. Yet, I yearned to believe in it, as I desperately craved to believe that at my own death, I will be reunited with my love – Didyme. It may come when forever ends. I sighed inwardly.

And then there was that unsettling disturbance again. I wavered in confusion. Could it possibly be a flicker of, and, I hesitated to use the word, emotion?

I listened more closely to the prattle between the power hungry Aro and his eager partner Caius, curious if my reaction was a result of their tedious discussion on how to bring down the Cullen family. Unlikely, but, still possible.

Bella. The human that the Cullen vampire wanted to die for had been turned. I paused my gazing at the gray skies to decipher my thoughts. There was a feeling of…satisfaction at the image of Edward Cullen with his Bella. Forever.

Earlier, when Edward Cullen had made his request for his own demise at the hands of the Volturi, a tinge of sympathy had welled within me for this young vampire who had lost his mortal love and desired his own release from the immortal coil that tethered him.

Later, I viewed the youthful impetuous undead and his beloved in the Volturi court, and the sight had stirred me from my waking slumber. The intensity of their relationship was like the burning sun upon a vampire’s diamond hard skin, brilliant facets that struck my inner eye to its core and so blinded me that I had to mentally veil my gift from the love torn pair.

Now, my despondency seemed to weigh even more, and, I realized that Aro, with his plans for the capture of Edward and his Bella, reminded me of the untenable position that my darling Didyme and I had been forced into when her maniacal power hungry brother shackled our services for the Volturi.

A part of me wished for another future for this immortal couple, and, I listened with growing melancholy as Aro and Caius outlined their familiar strategy of divide and conquer, before showing mercy upon the survivors, conveniently sparing those that they had previously selected.

The malaise threatened to tow me into the seas of hopeless despair. Then I saw my Didyme, floating in waves of ethereal happiness that I was more than happy to drown in forever. Yet she did not want me to stay with her. She desired that I go with Aro and Caius to where the Cullens resided. To help Edward and his Bella.

I silently argued that I have never been able to halt them in the hundreds of years that they have carried out their atrocious crimes under the guise of conscientious vampires abiding with the law. My Didyme silenced my protestations with an unseen kiss. How could I refuse her?

I turned to Aro and Caius and gravely answered their question as to whether I was ready to go to Forks. “Yes.”

Aro clapped his hands excitedly like a child, while Caius smiled slowly in satisfaction. Preparations began for the whole Volturi court to make the journey to Forks with the intent to destroy the ties that bind the Cullen family together. If they had their way, more than half of the Cullens will not live to see the dawn break, while its remaining members will live out their immortal existence in servitude to the Volturi.

Lorna Lopez aka ATwilightKiss Notes

I must say, when I read this again, I was pretty amazed that I was able to do this in like hours. It must be because I’ve always been fascinated with the story of Marcus and Didyme, as told by Stephenie Meyer on her site.

What happened to Marcus’s wife?

Once upon a time, a fairly young vampire (he had only been a vampire for a decade and a half) named Aro changed his young sister Didyme, who had just reached adulthood, into a vampire in order to add her to his growing coven. Aro always wanted power, and because he himself had a potent mind-reading gift, he hoped his biological sister would also be gifted in a way that would help him rise in the vampire world. It turned out that Didyme did have a gift; she carried with her an aura of happiness that affected everyone who came near her. Though it wasn’t exactly what he had hoped for, Aro pondered the best ways he could use this gift.

Meanwhile, Aro’s most trusted partner, Marcus, fell in love with Didyme. This was not unusual; given the way she made people feel, lots of people fell in love with Didyme. The difference was that this time, Didyme fell in love herself. The two of them were tremendously happy. So happy, in fact that, after a while, they no longer cared that much about Aro’s plans for domination. After a few centuries, Didyme and Marcus discussed going their own way.

Of course, Aro was well aware of their intentions. He was not happy about it, but he pretended to give his blessing. Then he waited for an opportunity to act, and when he knew he would never be found out, he murdered his sister. After all, Marcus’s gift was much more useful to him than hers had been. This is not to say that Aro did not truly love his sister; it’s just that a key part of his personality is the ability to destroy even what he loves in order to further his ambitions.

Marcus never found out that Aro was responsible for Didyme’s death. He became an empty man. Aro used Chelsea’s gift to keep Marcus loyal to the Volturi, though not even Chelsea’s gift could make Marcus show any enthusiasm for it.
