A Twilight Kiss

Since Joan Jett is the producer of The Runaways film, I expected the movie to focus on her ascent to stardom. However, although the opening sequences featured Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett prominently, the film quickly shifted gears to focus its attention on the character of Dakota Fanning — Cherie Currie — and only serves to prove what a class act Joan Jett is.

By the end of The Runaways film, the love and respect of Joan Jett for Cherie Currie is so palpable it takes your breath away. Instead of focusing on how she has carved out a place in rock and roll history, Joan Jett chose to tell the story of Cherie Currie’s rise as the lead singer of the first all female rock band to her descent into the dark world of drug addiction.

Dakota Fanning rises to the occasion as she imbues Cherie Currie with a haunting vulnerability, sensuality and raw talent that ensnare audiences around the world. Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett is the perfect foil for her, brooding, passionate, forceful and immensely committed to her music.

Thankfully, when I watched the film at The Cathay Cineplex in Singapore on 16 May 2010, none of the intimate scenes between Cherie Currie and Joan Jett were cut, which were beautifully and tastefully done, by the way, and cements the strong bonds that were forged between Joan Jett and Cherie Currie from the time they were teenagers to the present day.

I think only Joan Jett could have persuaded Cherie Currie to come out in public once more in such a huge way for The Runaways film, since the Cherry Bomb singer now prefers a more private and secluded life as an artist.
