Hopefully Robert Pattinson Will Not Do Romantic Memoirs

Variety reports, “Twilight star Robert Pattinson is in talks to star in Summit Entertainment’s romance-drama ‘Memoirs,’ [which] centers on a pair of star-crossed lovers who meet and fall in love while struggling to deal with family tragedies that threaten their relationship.”
Star crossed lovers? Again? In a romantic drama? Again? From an actor who has gone super dorky in How to Be and angst-ridden gay in Little Ashes?
Somehow, I find the idea of Rob being in Memoirs very dull and boring. I think it’s because I find the story line too near to that of Twilight. His first film project outside that of Twilight has to be something radically different. Maybe something in between his past film choices and a commercial one.
Although I’m sure it’s an excellently written script (original script by Will Fetters with Jenny Lumet of ‘Rachel Getting Married’ for rewrites), with all the fantastic people on board (to be directed by Allen Coulter of Hollywoodland, The Sopranos and Damages), I don’t think it’s what Rob needs psychologically to prepare him for the publicity grind of New Moon and shooting Eclipse right after.
C’mon, Rob’s management team! Let’s have a little more imagination. There must be something else! We don’t want Rob to go freakin’ mad here! We want him to be creatively stimulated during that break between New Moon and Eclipse. (Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart will be off to do sex, drugs, rock and roll bio-film ‘The Runaways.’) We don’t want Rob Twilighted out!

I was totally thinking the exact same thing. I would love to see him play a villian or a bad guy.

OK…. but aren’t you contradicting yourself? I mean – The Haunted Airman, The Dark Kingdom, The Bad Mother’s Handbook, How to Be, Little Ashes – they’re all not different enough? Every film he’s done so far was radically different! I’m thinking he’ll chose on whatever script seems interesting to him and also according to the people involved. He seems genuinely interested in his craft and wants to learn and work with amazing people. So… more power to him!

Yes, Astrid, exactly along those same lines. Memoirs seems like a Summit driven project. If he really wants to do it, great; but, considering how, like you said, he chooses on the basis of the script and the people involved, Memoirs seems off.

Lorna,
I agree with you 100% on this post! He needs to do something different.

Considering how often he says he HATES hollywood´s policy, I´m surprised how he changed his mind quickly. Or is he afraid of his limited talent as an actor (sad but true) and will repeat the SAME BORING ROLE as a prince charming? Just another hunky piece of meat, it seems. Dangerous and disappointing to say the least. He´ll keep the 12 years olds but that´s all, he´ll lose the rest forever.

Yea right! Don’t do the dork film! Aaa! But hey that’s my opinion, no fighting

Astrid, I agree with you completely. I’m sure that whatever role he chooses he will bring something special to it!

I agree with you Lorna. I would have preferred he do a thriller or a comedy, not romantic drama. Romantic comedy maybe more acceptable, if it has to a “romance” type film. No drama movies yet, maybe until after two years. I am thinking actually he could do a young James Bond like how 007 came about — sort of James Bond the Beginning (when he got first recruited, beginnings of his training). As we know, James Bond has that sly sense of humor which Robert can bring to life. James Bond also has that dark side which Robert can also bring to life. I really really think James Bond, the beginnings, will be a good next film for Robert. But, it won’t happen I guess, cause he is tied to Summmit.

If you compare Robert’s sudden rise to fame to Patrick Swayze after the 1987 dirty dancing. There are similarities. He was relatively unknown. Did a romance that teen girls and women all over the world obsessed about. Because an over night pin up. There was even the romance rumor sounding him and Jennifer Grey like there are about Robert and Kristen. All because there was great on screen chemistry.
Then remember his movie choices after. A few action and drama movies. Then one other romance “Ghost” Which was also very successful. Then more action and He just seemed to fade away.
I think the mistake was. His over night fame was all thanks the the women that adored him and (except for “Ghost”) he stopped appealing to his fans.
Robert’s choice in this movie is the ideal one. It is mainly a drama not just a romance. It’s the best way to slowly ease out of teen romances while still keeping his fans happy while drawing in a new audience and fan base. Yes he should do other genres. But not yet. His career needs time to stable first. It needs to be a slow gradual thing when he is a more established actor.
