No Michael Sheen in Underworld 4

With the story line of Underworld 4 kept a secret, I earlier wondered if Volturi Michael Sheen will be part of the film, having been such an intriguing figure in the first installment and then graduating to the ultimate romantic persona by the third film, notwithstanding the personal turmoil he had with his then co-star and now ex-wife Kate Beckinsale.

Presently, Michael Sheen is clearly not part of Underworld 4, dampening my excitement for the vampire – lycan series. I’m still trying to summon the enthusiasm to go to the movie theater. I may end up not going at all, though.

Captive World Premiere at Berlin Film Festival on February 2012

While researching about the world premiere of Robert Pattinson’s Bel Ami at the Berlin Film Festival, the word Philippines caught my eye. It seems that my country, in cooperation with France, Germany and Great Britain, has a film entitled Captive as part of the competition. This is quite momentous because the last time Philippines competed was almost three decades ago. Philippine Daily Inquirer reports :

[Director Brillante Ma. Mendoza’s] “Captive,” formerly titled “Prey,” tells the story of a foreign aid worker (French actress Isabelle Huppert) who gets kidnapped, along with Filipinos, by bandit groups in Mindanao.

“Captive,” will compete in the main section of the Berlin International Film Festival, which will be held in the German capital on February 9-19 [2012].

Breaking Dawn and Deathly Hallows On Top 5 Highest Grossing Films in 2011

The two must-see films in 2011 for me were The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, both of which have ended up on the Top 5 Highest Grossing Films in 2011.

The last installment in the wizard boy’s travails took in US$1.3B worldwide, while the second to the last film of The Twilight Saga franchise earned US$648M.

What’s Next for Summit Entertainment After The Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga ends next year, 2012, when the second part of Breaking Dawn is released; and with it comes the end of certainty for Summit Entertainment, which has used the box office hit earnings of Twilight to venture into eclectic film projects in 2011 such as The Three Musketeers, Source Code and 50/50.

So, which book series is Summit Entertainment hoping to become another hit for the company? I’m betting it’s the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, the first book of which is already a bestseller. Summit Entertainment even brought author Veronica Roth to the 2011 Comic Con to promote the upcoming film.

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Trailer

The tenuous reason why I’m featuring The Hobbit trailer is because Breaking Dawn actor Lee Pace, who has been cast as Garrett, is part of the Peter Jackson film. That aside, the real reason is because I love The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and having its prequel finally onscreen after a long battle over the book and film rights is just wonderful, certainly making the last quarter of 2012 a truly merry one, with The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 in November and The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey in December.

Funny how random events seem to flow together.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart flew to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on November 2010 to shoot some of the Breaking Dawn honeymoon scenes.

On November 2011, after watching The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1, ATK reader Karen and I talked about how wonderful it would be to go to this mesmerizing city of rhythms and people, a place that has fascinated me ever since I perused a book about it when I was a child.

And then, a few days later, my thong slippers broke. By chance, I learned online about a promo from Ipanema Philippines wherein every purchase of slippers would entitle the person to a raffle entry to the Spoil Your Sole in Rio promo.

The prize? A seven-day and six-night VIP tour package exploring the 2-day Rio de Janeiro Carnival, visits to the Sugar Loaf Mountain, Corcovado, the Petropolis with a total of USD1,000 pocket money.

Edward Cullen on Abortion

In one of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 film sequences, Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen angrily blurts out that the decision whether to keep “it” or not should have been discussed between himself and Bella because they’re partners.

Currently, in the Philippines, there’s a brewing sex scandal wherein the former male partner of a young actress had this to say about an alleged abortion by his ex-girlfriend (okay, it’s Mo Twister on Rhian Ramos).

“I can only make one promise: I will never, ever agree to take the life of a child again. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t my body or my choice. I will not be put against the wall again. I should have stood my ground, fought harder, delayed it longer, encouraged more people to talk her out of it.”

Although male and female partners may discuss whether to abort a baby or not, I hope the males remember, ultimately, that it’s the female’s choice. Her decision. And he has to respect it. Even if it’s totally opposite from what he wants.

Abortion is illegal here in the Philippines, which is not surprising with the strong influence of the Roman Catholic Church, forcing women who wish to terminate their pregnancy to either find someone willing to perform it illegally, or, travel to another country where it is legal, if they can afford it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 DVD

I didn’t realize it was going to be such an emotional week. I was totally unaware that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 DVD was going to be released so near the Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere.

I’ve already been crying upon seeing Snape’s death sequence, where his love for Harry’s mum, Lily, was revealed, when I watched a short video of the last farewells of the cast to the Harry Potter audience and When Harry Left Hogwarts, a long feature that allowed a film crew to document the making of the last film, showing the last days of the cast, including the emotional Dan, Emma and Rupert hugging it out, which set off another bout of tears on my part.

I should stop watching the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 DVD on 16 November 2011, Wednesday, or I’ll be emotionally wiped out when I watch The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 preview the next day, 17 November 2011.

Breaking Dawn Part 1 Preview It’s crazy, but I didn’t have to buy tickets for The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1! First, my friend Noodles suddenly asked me about my availability on 17 November 2011, 8pm. It seems that a website is selling tickets to an advance preview for that date at SM North EDSA mall. Not only that, but Noodles bought two tickets, so now, I get to treat a friend too.

Breaking Dawn Part 1 Fundraiser And then, my sister-in-law, Evelyn, surprised me by saying that she bought a ticket for me for a fundraiser featuring a screening of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 at Eastwood Mall on 19 November 2011 at 7pm. And my niece is going as well. It’s a girls’ night out!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Reaches US$1 Billion

Box Office Mojo reports that the last installment of the Harry Potter series — Deathly Hallows Part 2 — has joined a short list of films that have reached the US$1B mark.

[Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2] passed $1 billion worldwide (domestic plus foreign) on Sunday, [31 July 2011]. Deathly Hallows Part 2 hit $1 billion on its 19th day in theaters, which tied Avatar’s record for fastest to reach that level. With a US$1.008 billion total, Potter ranked eighth on the all-time worldwide chart.

Interestingly, when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reached US$1B, it’s Harry Potter’s birthday — 31 July 2011. What a wonderful coincidence!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 broke a lot of records and earned a whopping US$475.5 on its opening weekend. With the film also available on 3D, which will surely drive up its receipts, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is expected to be the first film in the franchise to reach more than a billion dollars. When it does, it will join a short list of films that have done so, which include Avatar, Titanic, Lord of the Rings Return of the King and Toy Story 3.

Let me put it this way. My cup holder in the movie theater held a pack of tissues. After the movie, my eyes felt swollen. I had to put eye drops to lessen the irritation. And I had to wait for some time before the pain would go down.

And, I’ll repeat the experience. After a regular screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on 14 July 2011 at Gateway Cineplex, I’ll amp it a bit by catching an IMAX 3D version on 16 July 2011. And then, consider watching it again. And maybe again.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Cast Reunion

You know what would be cool? If the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere could arrange to have all previous cast members from parts 1-7 to come and attend the London premiere on 07 July 2011, so that actors, whose characters have either died or written off for brevity’s sake, can come and attend. That will surely include Robert Pattinson, who played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film.

Based on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 photo call, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Notably missing was Daniel Radcliffe. I hope he can make it to the London premiere.

Anyway, we just bought our Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 tickets. Since it’s the last one, we decided to splurge on IMAX 3D. And, may I gloat a little, and say that it will open in Manila Philippines on 14 July 2011 (plus the time difference…).

How Stephenie Meyer May Have Influenced Publishing

The Stephenie Meyer Influence Aside from making dazzling vampires and supernatural creatures very lucrative for publishers, I have noticed two major differences in the books that I’ve been reading lately.

The First Person POV First, there has been a shift in the point of view of the characters. For decades, the use of the first person point of view or using “I” has been out of fashion, with the third person usage more acceptable, hence the proliferation of “he, she, they” in millions of fictional books. Twilight’s use of the voice of Bella Swan makes the reading experience more intimate, one that Robert Pattinson describes as “voyeuristic.”

The Emergence of the Female Character The enormous success of the Twilight series has shown businessmen that the numerous female markets and demographics are very profitable. In the past, the female character as the lead in a book is mainly limited to romances. Today, it’s a very common occurrence, with books such as The Hunger Games with Katniss Everdeen, Divergent with Beatrice Prior, Bumped with Melody and Harmony, and Wither with Rhine Ellery. And, they’re all in the first person point of view.

The Twilight Saga and The Hobbit Connection

I am going to use a tenuous excuse to unashamedly post on ATK about The Lord of the Rings trilogy prequel — The Hobbit. Lee Pace, who has been cast as Garrett in The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn, has also been cast in the Peter Jackson film as the elf-king Thranduil, the father of Legolas.

Orlando Bloom began his acting career by playing the iconic elf Legolas in the Oscar Award winning film adaptation of the books, Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien. Peter Jackson recently announced that the Pirates of Caribbean star and husband to Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr will reprise the role that made him famous.

The Hobbit will also bring back to Middle Earth other Lord of the Rings stars: Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel.

Summit Entertainment Acquires Film Rights to Divergent by Veronica Roth

Summit Entertainment Confirmation On 18 March 2011, Summit Entertainment confirmed on its site that it has acquired the film rights to the very first book of author Veronica Roth entitled Divergent

Harper Collins Excerpt Joy Glass, on behalf of Harper Collins, has sent me an excerpt of Divergent via email. The first nine chapters were more than enough to get me hooked, so I bought the book.

The Twilight Saga and Harry Potter series are almost at an end. Excitement, jubilation and sadness are intermingling. I survived the culmination of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, of course, I can do this. My only frustration is that The Twilight Saga films are not on the same artistic and creative level as that of Harry Potter and, in my opinion, the ultimate best fantasy book to film adaptation — The Lord of the Rings — directed by the absolutely brilliant Peter Jackson

It seems that Kristen Stewart is not the only one who has turned into a full-fledged adult recently. Harry Potter star Emma Watson celebrated her 21st birthday on 15 April 2011, a week after the Twilight heroine.

Surprisingly, Emma Watson has revealed that, at one point, she considered giving it all up to have normalcy in her life, i.e. she seriously thought of not renewing her Harry Potter contract.

As the years went on Watson became increasingly conflicted about whether she wanted to keep playing the role [of Hermione Granger], or to even act at all. “Dan and Rupert seem so sure,” she said on the set of the fifth film, The Order of the Phoenix. “I love to make people laugh, and I love being creative, but there are so many other things I love doing, too. I’ve been given such amazing opportunities with this, but … I don’t know.”

This summer [of 2010], Emma Watson had finished shooting Hallows and was headed back to school for her sophomore year at Brown University. She’d just gotten a new pixie haircut — the first time in 10 years she’d been able to choose her own hairstyle — and was elated by her life on campus. “I have such a structure when I’m working on Potter,” she said. “I get told what time I get picked up. I get told what time I can eat, when I have time to go to the bathroom. Being at college, I took pleasure in the smallest things. Like, ‘I’m going to wake up at 10 o’clock if I want to.’ Or, ‘I’m going to eat a sandwich now.’ It feels wonderful.”

First, there was excitement. A free On the Road 15-minute promo DVD will be given away to all those who give a reservation fee for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 DVD or Blu-ray set, which will be released on 15 April 2011 in the Philippines.

And then, logic began to set in. The markets of the film On the Road, in which Kristen Stewart stars in, is markedly different from that of the Harry Potter audiences. A closer inspection revealed that the On the Road title refers to an on the road documentary of the different locations during the Harry Potter 7 shoot, and will not be included in either the DVD or Blu-ray as featurettes.

This just goes to prove that when you’re a Twilighter, your point of view is slightly skewed. LOL

I Am Number Four Gets Twilight Romantic

I am surmising that the overly romantic take of the film adaptation of the book I Am Number Four is the fault of the gross receipts of The Twilight Saga franchise. Film companies have realized the immense financial power of the female demographic markets and are trying to accommodate it.

However, I Am Number Four is primarily an action type of book, with the romance kept to a minimum. Therefore, when those minor details are magnified to a ludicrous level in the film version, such as taking the time to develop sweet pictures when murderous aliens are after you, it’s not in keeping with the spirit of the book.

The Twilight books are about love, so the films can inject a lot of romance, because it is expected; but, when I Am Number Four does it, it makes me dismiss it as ridiculous.

Now, thank goodness for Number Six. She brings the action! Yeah!

Anne Rice Book Angel Time

I can entirely blame Twilight for reversing my aversion for vampires. As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, I’m a scaredy-cat, so Twilight is the first book I’ve ever read with vampires. With constant exposure to the blood sucking creatures through The Twilight Saga, I found myself attempting to watch vampire-filled films and TV series. That’s also why I contemplated reading Anne Rice books, which are famous for its loving depiction of the nocturnal creatures, such as The Interview with the Vampire or The Queen of the Damned.

So while I was at the bookstore, I picked up a paperback version of Angel Time by Anne Rice, thinking that with a title like that, it might be a gentle way of easing into the frightful world of vampires. However, I was bewildered when there was no mention of such. Instead, it focused on the spiritual enlightenment of a lost man, making me lose interest halfway through the book.

So, although Anne Rice has dismissed the Twilight series as a “really silly premise,” I find it ironic that it is entirely because of Twilight that I will be reading one of her vampire books in the future.
